Migrant boat tragedy: Nato condemned over 63 migrants left to die at sea

Last report raises possibility

British helicopter was aware of people drifting for two weeks without food or water

A damning report on the news of the death of dozens of African migrants were left adrift in the Mediterranean last year concluded that NATO has contributed to 63 deaths, and raised for the first time the possibility that British military forces whose relationship with the tragedy.

The full 90-page study by experts from the University of London Goldsmiths uses technology, "forensic oceanography" technology to determine the exact movements of migrant vessels convicts who remained drift without electricity for two weeks in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, although European leaders and NATO were aware of the situation of the ship and its location. Almost everyone on board, including two young children, eventually dying of hunger and thirst.

The report reveals that the description of the survivors of a military helicopter hovering over twice and called his boat, only to steal and leave and leave without attempting a rescue, corresponds almost exactly with the British Army Westland Lynx helicopter. Units lynx are known to have been used in the Mediterranean at the time of the Libyan conflict.

The Guardian is awaiting a response from the Ministry of Defence on the content of the report

The report also cites the testimony of a survivor who suggests that a warship which was in direct contact with migrants, so just ignore their calls for help, he could be French.

The latest revelations will increase pressure on NATO to release the classified images and data that might help identify the units responsible for failing to mount a rescue operation. The problem in question units became more important than Europe human rights lawyers said the prosecution was recently launched against those responsible for the death.

Last month, an investigation into the incident by the Council of Europe, the human rights watchdog on the continent, found that the catalog of legal and institutional failures have leads to unnecessary and avoidable death of migrants. He called on NATO and its member states to launch their own investigation into why so many military units, including a Spanish frigate, under the command of NATO, which sailed close to the boat, did not respond to Requests for migrants desperate for help. A row broke out between NATO and Spain after the Spanish Ministry of Defence publicly contradicted the official version of events of NATO.

NATO first denied knowledge of the craft of migrants admitted only after the Italian Coast Guard was informed of the location of the boat. The military alliance insists that this information was passed to units under their control, but the Spaniards were challenged NATO to prove the statement, NATO has refused to answer questions on the subject

The new report is to establish exactly what military helicopters and warships approached that allow migrants to drift, although passengers dead babies up and empty fuel tanks to indicate their status .
